Which curricula do you support?

CAPS, DBE, IEB and Cambridge secondary school curricula are supported today, and we work with South African tertiary programmes on a per-institution basis. ExamMark is tuned subject-by-subject rather than using a generic rubric matcher. If a subject you need is not yet supported, tell us during the pilot conversation.

Is this suitable for formal matric prelims?

Yes. Every paper is graded by two independent AI graders with a third arbitrator on disagreement, full audit logging per mark, and Subject Matter Expert moderation before any result leaves the platform. The output is designed to satisfy DBE moderation requirements. The SME remains the final authority.

Who owns the student data?

Accepted Answer

The institution does. The institution is the data controller under POPIA, we are the data processor. Uploaded papers, marked outputs and audit records are purged from our systems 72 hours after you download the handover bundle, unless you explicitly request longer retention. No student data is used to train models.

What happens when the AI and the Subject Matter Expert disagree on a mark?

The moderation dashboard surfaces every question where the two AI graders disagreed or where confidence is below your threshold. Your SME reviews each, accepts or corrects, and adds comments. The SME decision is final and is recorded in the audit trail.

How accurate is it?

Accuracy is not a single headline number; it varies by subject, question type, and handwriting quality. After every pilot we publish per-subject reliability metrics against SME moderation for that institution. We prefer to show you a graded paper of yours before asking you to trust a claim.

Can you grade handwritten papers?

Yes. Our OCR has been tested against a range of handwriting styles as well as typed papers. Where handwriting is unclear, the question is flagged to the SME for manual review rather than guessed.

How does this integrate with our learning management system?

We export graded PDFs, per-paper CSVs and a full audit JSON, all in a single ZIP per batch. These drop into any LMS that accepts mark imports. Direct API integrations with specific LMS providers are on the roadmap for institutions running pilots.
